This concept brings together ideas by Common Ground Tasmania tenants Norman, Pamela, Haydn, Mark, Robert, Hedy, Maureen (Sissy), Jo, Darren and Daniel. Each image represents a section of the wall to scale: 1.2m highx5.5m wide. The complete wall 10 has sections, totalling 1.2m high x 55m wide.
The concept has been amended in line with tenants' comments as follows:
greater use of colour overall (general consenus from all participants)
light to dusk theme from panel 1 to panel 10 (general consenus from all participants). This is represented as a stylized colour concept in keeping with the overall context of a public art project based on an integration of 10 or more artists. The gradation is subtle.
red sunset/burning sky over homestead (panels 8,9,10) (Daniel). Note the colour is a rich red ochre rather than a bright red. This will ensure the colour strengthens the work and complements any future landscaping in sandstone tones.
purple hill as stylized mountain 'line' ranging across all panels - note this is represented as a line, rather than a full feature colour, as too many competing fields of colour will detract from the overall coherence of the work.
Indigenous feature (Walking through the landscape and arriving at a meeting place for reconcilation) (Jo, panel 4)
extra tree and blackbird (Pamela, panel 5)
It is noted that the design sets out to integrate all of the drawings. The amendments have been made carefully to ensure that the works harmonize and complement the vastly different range of voices and concerns. The medium is therefore a stylized expression which brings disparate elements together. Form and colour are integral elements which have been enhanced to ensure an integrated, balanced and broadly appealing aesthetic. The mural is designed to enrich the tenants' environment as well as enhance the architecture of the building. The end result is a piece of public art made by the tenants of Common Ground that reflects the vibrance of the community, and takes the viewer on a journey through a fascinating landscape of life.
